Ian
Thomas with
Paleface |
$8-$10
|
|
Ian
Thomas' debut album is a "fast, focused,
forward-looking" powerhouse of acoustic blues from one of
the most honest and engaging undiscovered singer-songwriters of
our time.
After traveling the country for years with a guitar and a
knapsack strapped to his back, Ian Thomas gave up the wandering
life and settled into New York City, busking for cash and living
out of a beaten-up 1977 Toyota Corolla. It is this unusual life
story that forms the backdrop of "A Young Man's
Blues", an album that is as mired in the confusion and
paranoia of the modern world as it is rooted in traditional
American folk and blues.
|

|
|
While
the album invokes the likes of Bob Dylan, Son House, and
Townes
Van Zandt, in the words of reviewer Neal Block, "...
Thomas's voice and vision are surely his own."

Pruitt |

Johnny Cash" series
|

Red-dirt troubadour Brandon Pruitt, was raised
on hardscrabble American roots music, by blue-collar
revolutionists like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Pruitt’s
material covers the dark subject matter of his predecessors with
songs about lovers done wrong to Christian ethos on heaven and
hell. “Growing up in Oklahoma has affected my music
by always keeping me rooted and grounded in reality. It
has shaped my songwriting and every aspect of my life. From
religion to sin, I owe everything to the red-dirt I grew up
on”, says Pruitt. |

Danielle
Howle &
The Bowmans |
$10-$12*
|
| We’re sooo happy to have Danielle
Howle back…we
love her so much. After show get-togethers are legend…much
pickin’, laughin’ and good feelins ‘tween good
friends. Y’all make time to get yourselves to one of
these or any number of grass-roots, American Music…you’d
be right at home…c’mon in…grab a drink and sing a
song …for the night is always nigh…and this love will
not go by… |
 |
"Danielle Howle is a
Southern storyteller with a gorgeous sense of melody and a
voice that should be pouring out of stereos everywhere...
but she is true to the underground rock community that
first nurtured her and has not made the leap to televised
fame. If she never gets there , consider yourself
lucky to have found her , she is one to treasure."
-NEW YORK TIMES
" I like to think of myself as a photographer that
uses melody and words in place of film and camera . I just
take pictures of time."
-Danielle Howle |

|

|
With harmonies that seem to come from one
astonishing voice, The Bowmans share a rare, near
telepathic musical bond. The Brooklyn based "roller
coaster" duo ranges from poignantly captivating to
serendipitously joyful. Their music is concurrently
sophisticated and imaginative, blending together the
preserved vulnerability and abandoned glee of their
childhood. The Bowmans deeply move and |
|
delight their audience world wide with uncanny, evocative,
and unforgettable performances. Sweeping across a
full range of passions, the cohesive debut album from The
Bowmans, Far from Home, (Mother West Records) includes
shattering acoustic harmony-rich ballads to heartening
rock songs infused with early classical and gospel
influences. The duo's sound has been compared to Gillian
Welch, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, to name a few, but
they are impossible to pigeonhole. Sarah and Claire Bowman
have the unique intuitive connection common to twins who
have performed together since youth, and because of this
they are clearly always on the same musical page. |

Gretchen
Witt
with Erika
Blatnik |
$8-$10*
|
|
Gretchen Witt is an acoustic rock
singer/songwriter with folk sensibilities. She was selected
as a Finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk
Competition, as a Top 5 Finalist in the Telluride Bluegrass
Festival's Troubadour Competition, and has received multiple
honors from the Mid Atlantic Song Contest (2007 Silver Prize in
Folk Category for "Sun on My Back", 2007 Honorable
Mention in Pop Category for "Sunday Night", 2007
Honorable Mention in Folk Category for "Say So", 2006
Honorable Mention in Folk Category for "Consequence",
2006 Honorable Mention in Folk Category for "Soft
Spot").
|
 |
|
She plays regularly in New York City with her
band at venues such as The Living Room, Makor, and The Bitter
End, at festivals across the country including South by
Southwest, The Heart of Texas Music Festival, NEMO (Boston), The
Dewey Beach Festivals, The Black Potato Music Festival (NJ), and
at The National Association of College Activities (NACA)
Conferences where she was awarded three showcases within her
first year. She also frequents Folk Series such as The Eclectic
Cafe (Bayshore, NY) and Acoustic Long Island (St. James, NY).
She recently opened for Pete Seeger at The Beacon Sloop Club's
Alternative Energy Festival (Beacon, NY). Other venues of
interest where she has performed include The Stanhope House
(NJ), World Cafe Live (Philadelphia), Flipnotics (Austin, TX),
and Club Passim (Boston). |
| |
"When Erika Blatnik
begins strumming her acoustic guitar and singing in front
of an attentive audience, the atmosphere immediately
becomes electric. Not that her music is electric --
or even loud. The electricity comes from Blatnik's
dynamic performances, the confessional lyrics she writes
and sings in a stream of consciousness that seems as if
someone took her thumb out of a musical dike and just let
an entire ocean of thoughts and feelings flow out all at
once."

Stevie
Coyle
with opening by
Scott Hinkle |
$10-$12*
|
|
Stevie Coyle (late of the whiz-bang
string band The Waybacks) is one lucky bum. His dad ran a radio
station in southern California and brought home all the promo
LPs that didn't fit the Spanish-language format. The Ventures'
Guitar Freakout, The 50 Guitars of Tommy Garrett and Alvin And
The Chipmunks Play The Beatles' Hits all came home on a single
fateful day. It didn't hurt, either, that string-meister David
Lindley played in a bluegrass band that rehearsed right next
door and gave Stevie his very first lessons, or that his dear
Granny was a pianist in the heyday of vaudeville and that his
sainted mother was a whiz in mandolin orchestras during the
1930s. Stevie has degrees in both Theater and Theology
and |
 |
|
has been an actor and a circus performer as well
as a musician and songwriter. Stevie's gone solo now, and
is busily booking tours and completing his first solo CD,
produced by singer/songwriter and guitar guru Walter
Strauss. Stevie tours nationwide.
|
| |
| Scott Hinkle's unique vocals and
harmonies are supported by his guitar, mandolin, bass and
drum playing. Don’t be surprised by his range of
music. He sings of love from the heart, as well as
some tunes that you can groove to. As John Lee
Hooker once said, "its just that boogie woogie, the
boy’s got it in him, and it’s got to come out." |

FUTURE
OF FOLK PROMOTIONS PRESENTS:
The
New Familiars
with opening by
Ian Thomas
and Holy
Ghost Tent Revival |
$10-$12*
|
 |
|
"From the foothills of North Carolina a
new musical combo has appeared, grown from seeds of the folk,
blues, and bluegrass found abundant in their homelands and
nurtured by the phenomenal breadth of genres and styles that
have bloomed and withered over the last 50 years in American
music. Known as The New Familiars, these gentlemen
combine an amazing passion for harmony with multi-instrumental
talent and an uncanny ability for storytelling. Writing folk
music from the core - of the people, by the people, and for the
people - while incorporating the multitudes of influences that
each of the members bring to the table, this band is a powerful
swell in a new wave of honest roots-derived rock n’ roll that
is sweeping the nation in the wake of a very tumultuous time in
our history." - CD Baby
|
|
 |
"Guitar-toting
folkie Ian Thomas may reside in New York City, but his
sound bypasses the concrete jungle for the deep rural
territories of acoustic blues. For a youngster, Thomas has an
astonishing command of his sound; this is timeless material
expertly performed. Thomas effortlessly bounces through
jaunty rags, crying ballads and gentle folk, treating each style
with casual reverence. Many of his songs are Dylanesque, but
Thomas never seems to be copying the Minnesota marvel. Instead,
their similarities arise from a common way of viewing the
American music canon. Thomas delves into gut-wrenching
poetics and rousing raves, each with the same charming
result." -- cdbaby.com/cd/ianthomas |

|
The members of the Holy Ghost Tent Revival
assembled out of a singular, driving purpose: to bring the
sounds that will make your mothers chant; the sounds that will
make your fathers get up and dance; to make the preacher man's
daughter blush and turn the volume up on her stereo just a
little bit more...... These young men guarantee honesty in
the hopes that you may think of their words when joys or
troubles involve themselves in your life, but most importantly,
they wish to extend their love for all your kind words and
support as they grow in their mission to bring the good-time
sounds of the Carolinas to those in need of just that. Pull a
chair up and listen close to the beat, and hopefully you'll like
what you hear. |

BOMBADIL
w/ Joshua
Panda |
$10-$12*
|
 |
"With a sound all their own and a stage
show to match, Bombadil is, if nothing else, one of the
freshest bands to emerge in a long time. Formed by Daniel
Michalak, Bryan Rahija and Stuart Robinson, this band draws on a
unique mélange of influences to create a sound that is
unclassifiable. .....A circus-reared version of The Band was
born in Bolivia where Michalak and Rahija first met. The folk
music indigenous to the region lit a creative spark and inspired
the two to begin |
|
writing songs that incorporated
international instruments and styles. That influence, paired with
their collective backgrounds in Piedmont blues, psychedelic rock
and Robinson’s background as a classical pianist, stands as
the driving force behind the band’s unique sound." -
